“Should I leave my job?” 5 signs it’s time to move on

There are many reasons that people can be unhappy at work, from office politics to limited growth opportunities. Here are some of the more telling signs that your current position might not be the right one for you:

1) You don’t aspire to be like your boss

Ok, so you don't have to morph into your manager, but the people ahead of you at work should inspire you. Do you want their job? Do you consider their role to be exciting? If not, you’re likely to lack the motivation to succeed in this environment. And who can blame you? If the end goal isn't aligned with your ambitions, this might not be the right position for you.

2) You wouldn’t want to be there even if your salary were doubled

It can be hard to see beyond poor pay when it comes to job satisfaction because of the additional stress it lays at your door. But imagine all your money woes were solved and your job paid you enough to save for luxuries such as holidays, as well as cover your expenses comfortably. Is this enough to make you happier? If even the money doesn't do it for you, it's definitely time to move on.

3) You haven’t had the opportunity to implement what you were promised at interview stage

Depending on your level, you probably arrived in your new job with ideas of what you'd like to achieve, learn and contribute to. Have you had the opportunity to do this? If not, try talking to your manager. If this still doesn't work, it's definitely worth looking for a role that will help you grow into the professional you aspire to be.

4) You dread going to work

We all have moments when we’d rather be curled up in front of the TV or out with friends than heading to a day at the office. But if you often dread going to work, or if you regularly feel highly stressed, anxious, or even nauseous, this is not OK and you must remind yourself that you have options. Even a quick chat with a recruiter will remind you that there are plenty of great opportunities out there, and the best recruiters will even guide you to employers looking for your exact skill set.

5) You’re not happy with your quality of life

There are times in life when work is busy and you've got to be able to roll with it. But if you find you're constantly neglecting your hobbies and friends, lack the time and energy to pursue your other goals, or even get ill a lot, these are signs that your job isn't the right fit for the lifestyle you're looking for. Looking after yourself and pursuing other goals aren't indulgences, they're necessities. It's worth finding a job - and a commute - that can make this your reality.

So what can you do about it?

If you can relate to any of the above examples, it’s definitely worth exploring your options. Drop your CV here, and we’ll be in touch to chat things through.
